Note: you can get all of the benefits of blogging for free (without paying for hosting and without having to manage the design and set up of a blog) by simply blogging on your free CMConnect blog.

Requirements:

Wordpress.org's free download

Download this plug-in:

ning-publisher-current.zip

Step 1: Install the plug-in

  1. Log onto your Wordpress site's admin.
  2. Navigate to the plug-ins page.
  3. Upload the ning-publisher plug in in zip format.
  4. Click "install now" and then activate it.

Step 2: Set up the plug-in

  1. Under the "settings" tab of your Wordpress blog click on "Ning Publisher"
  2. Email HelpCenter@CMConnect.org and request an API key (be sure to include a link to your blog)
  3. When you get the API key, copy and paste it into the "Ning Publisher" plug-in settings
  4. For Network subdomain: CMConnect
  5. For Consumer key: this will be emailed to you
  6. For Consumer secret: this will be emailed to you
  7. Click "save changes"

Step 3: Link your site:

  1. Under the "users" tab go to "your settings"
  2. Scroll to the bottom where you will see the "Ning Publisher" information
  3. Click on the "ning key" link
  4. In the pop up window, insert your CMConnect member email and password (this is what you use to log on to CMConnect)
  5. Click "Generat Token"
  6. Copy and paste the "Access Token" and "Access Token Secret" to "Your Profile" on Wordpress
  7. Then, you are done.

You can now post a blog to your Wordpress site and to CMConnect at the same time.

We're currently having some trouble linking sites hosted at dreamhost. Also, some twitter plug-ins can cause an error code. If you have any issues, please post them here and we'll work to resolve it.

THIS ISSUE has been resolved by the latest update to the plugin... you will need to update your plugin to fix it.
I never could get any of the three twitter plugins to work, but I did find a work around. If you use feedburner, you can set that up to automatically tweet your blog posts. It's not ideal, but it works, and it's worth it for the Ning Publisher functionality.
Thanks, Wayne... for those of you who don't know the other side of this conversation. The plug-in, because it is so new, is causing some trouble with some other twitter plug-ins that Wayne had installed. He had to deactivate the twitter plug-ins to get the CMConnect feed to work. However, and this is what Wayne is talking about, he was able to set up his blog to auto tweet by using feedburner.
You can also feed burn any RSS from this site: www.twitterfeed.com

What to do if you have a Wordpress.com site:
Wordpress.com will not allow plug ins. To make the plug-in work:
-you have to export your blog
-download the wordpress.org free download
-set up the hosting (GoDaddy seems to work best)
-import your blog data from wordpress.com
-then install the plug-in
The issues with blogs re-posting and not syncing with dreamhost have been resolved by the latest update. The link to the download at the top of this forum is the latest version.
okay i am totally new to my self-hosting wordpress blog. when you say edit the settings, do i just click on "edit" under the plugin. sorry to be so clueless. self taught and learning :)
Under the settings tab (in the left hand column) click on "ning publisher" and add your API credentials there.

Glad you are setting this up!

thanks Michael. I'm working on it today!

I can't find the ning-publisher plug-in in zip format    I already have a ning pug-in is that enough?

oops just went to settings and it says Ning publisher - don't remember it saying that before.

Sounds like you are on the right track. I'll get you the API tomorrow!
