What Do You Do with the Potential “Controversies” at Christmas?

Thanksgiving is past and most of us have begun a month of celebrating, special events, programs and parties leading up to Christmas! Definitely a busy time of year, but also a time of year which has great potential to stir up “trouble” as you try to discern the best way for your Children’s Ministry to handle things such as; gift exchanges, special service projects, dealing with “Santa” and just how many special events should you plan in this month when families already tend to be so busy.

So, what do you do? How do you handle these situations and others which seem to come up during the Christmas Season?

Hmm... This is indeed a subject of discussion that comes every year. Usually with much debate, sometimes heated. I'm a church planter/senior pastor now. Can I still share my thoughts? LOL. Well, I will anyway.

Events: While I do like to do a Christmas party, I also try to be respectful of each family's time. So, I usually will plan one Christmas party for all the kids, but that's it.

Service Projects: I have done special service projects around Christmas time in the past, I probably won't in the future. I worry that it might teach kids that Christmas is the time for such things when we should be teaching them that they can be done year round. Plus, I'm just not interested in filling up people already busy schedule.

Santa: Personally we have always done Santa in our home. However, I think this is a decision for each child's parents to make. So, I never confirm or deny the existence of Santa with my church kids. If asked, I simply ask them what their parents tell them. I then refer them back to their parents. Furthermore, I keep Santa out of church. While I personally think it's just harmless fantasy, I do recognize the "controversy" it can cause. My goal is to avoid, as much as possible, things that will distract from the sharing of the Gospel.

Gift exchange: Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. If I do I put a price limit on it and do it "white elephant" style. Most the time I don't cause I know most of don't need another cheap thing in our homes.

First of all, yes! Please always share!

Secondly, I appreciate your insight - I love the focus on being careful with and respectful of time - this time of year families have so many things filling their time for sure!

Thank you!

As I work to start a church people's time is something I am trying to remained focused on. Rather than filling up their calendars with new stuff I want to try to find ways for the church to be a part of the stuff that is already on their calendars. If their child plays baseball, we need to be there. If their child plays soccer, we need to be there. If their child is in dance, then we need to be there. I'm working to find ways that the church can go to where our people already are and be the church there.
