My biggest passion in kids ministry is pre-teen ministry. I was asked by my mentor way back in the day to start one when I could only find one other church doing preteen ministry.. I have been fortunate to see God do some amazing things over the years thru this age group. I have had the privelage of consulting with CIY on their Superstart program and helped contribute to their book "Leading Preteens". If you are not familiar with Superstart, check them out at http://www.ciy.com/superstart/ Patrick Snow is leading Superstart and he's awesome!

2013 A Year of Failure

Posted on December 31, 2012 at 12:56pm 0 Comments

I sincerely hope we fail this year in our Children's Ministry. Not fail miserably, but rather fail triumphantly. I hope we fail because we are sailing out into uncharted territory and not just coasting the waters close to home. We are not going to abandon the waters close to home. There are many things that are working great, but we always want to be looking out for opportunities to learn and grow from stretching…

Kids, the iPad and Swipe Drills. How will the electronic bible change things?

Posted on November 29, 2011 at 3:13pm 1 Comment

The day is coming soon when many of our kids will have their Bible in electronic form. For years in children’s ministry and continuing today much stock has been put into training our kids to be able to quickly locate scriptures. Perhaps you have run “Sword Drills” and handed out mass amounts of candy rewards. How many kids in your ministry have maybe felt inadequate or embarrassed about their ability to keep pace with their peer’s incredible lightning fast page shuffling skills? Now that…

How one question changed how I look at Children's Ministry today.

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 2:40pm 0 Comments

After nearly 20 years of being a Children's Pastor at the same church (Eastside Christian Church in Fullerton, CA and then Venture in Murrieta, CA a plant of Eastside). I took a new position in Colorado at LifeBridge Christian Church.  Having come to the church with a new set of eyes and what I thought were some great ideas to improve the children's ministry here, I was given the opportunity to share these ideas with the rest of the pastoral staff. This was it right? The big moment where I…

Hey Craig - wow man a lot has been happen since I last talked with you. I don't know if you remember, but I was over the preteen ministry at Christ's Church of Oronogo in Missouri for 5 years. Well we had some things changed in our jr. high ministry, so I also took over that ministry, so I was over 5-8 grades - I did that for about 2 years.

A year ago I left CCO and took the 5-8 grade position at LifeBridge Christian Church in Longmont, CO. Part way through, I killed our preteen ministry (Hard for me to have done, cause I love preteen ministry), because it was dying. It was composed of 5-6 grades and hardly any 6th graders were going to it - we had about four 6th graders attending with about 13 5th graders going to it ). We moved 6 grade back into the middle school ministry and now on average have about 30-40 6th graders attending. 5th grade went back into the children's ministry and has had some struggles (I really think we need to make a 4-5 grade ministry).

Altogether, our middle school ministry was dying when we got here (there was about 20 7-8 graders attending w/ about 3 volunteers), but we were able to turn it round - students are learning and growing, volunteers are growing in both leadership and numbers, and there is an all around excitement for Jesus and what God is doing in our church. But now they've asked me to take over the children's ministry (Birth-5 grade) and also help develop & become the family ministries director. I am nervous and not sure what I'm getting myself into :) I haven't been directly in children's ministry for about three years now and the dynamics are going to be way different: I'm going from about 150 students & 30 volunteers to about 700 kids & 150 volunteers, plus 14 paid staff members that I will be overseeing - and we do multi-sites as well, which is a whole other animal in itself.

Sorry to make a long story longer, but that is what's been happening and why I joined cmconnect. How are things with you?

Craig,

Getting back to you about your question of what curriculum we use. Right now we are using Kidmo, but I plan on changing curriculum soon. I'm meeting with my team this Sunday after church to discuss what we will do next. It's hard finding curriculum that is just right for your church. I'll keep you updated on what we are doing.
On that note, if you can point me toward some good resources, that would be very welcome. I'm going to give EK video curriculum another look, but I think I want to get away from video curriculum.

Craig,

I just wanted to stop by and encourage you to keep up the awesome work ministering to children!

You are needed!

My name is Jerry Moyer. I am a children's evangelist that travels across the United States & Canada ministering to children and families.

Our ministry is called The Jubilee Gang.

The Jubilee Gang is a fast paced multi-media ministry to children and families.

Our goals are to see as many men, women, boys, & girls born again as possible, to stir up believers to be all they can be for God, and teach them to reach out to the world around them with the Good News of the Gospel.

Our presentation is very entertaining, but we are 100% about ministry.

If we can ever be of any service to you or you need anything please feel free to contact me.

God Bless You!
Jerry
