New Here

I think this is going to be my mantra. It seems in the past 6 months my life experiences center around, "new here". From this forum, to being a children's minister to directing my first VBS. It seems God is doing crazy things and I LOVE it. There's a song by Sanctus Real called "Whatever you're doing". It's a great song and is exactly what I'm going through.

I look forward to meeting others on this forum. I'm new to this Children's Ministry thing as a profession even though I've been… Continue

Hey, I'm going to be in Rocklin for the PreTeen Leaders Conference. If you are in the area it would be great to meet you in person.

Hi Kate,
Sorry it's taken me a while to get back with you. Since we've moved the 5th/6th grade into their own ministry, my oversight is Kinder - 4th grade, so I wanted to talk to the preteen minister before getting back with you. He said there were very few obstacles, which is what I remembered as well. One issue was location for the ministry. We needed the preteen ministry to be upstairs with the students. A few parents were concerned with this. Even though they were in totally separate rooms for teaching, their paths still crossed in the hallways with junior high and high school. It proved to be no problem. One child wanted to be allowed to finish his AWANA books. We accomodated him. The other 40+ were excited to have their own "programming." The only other item that we remember is that the Awana leader felt a little sad. Help your children's leaders understand that this is not about what they are providing, but it's what's best for that age group of kids. I hope this helps.

Hi Kate - Nanci Martin here. I'm ministering in West Haven, Connecticut across this great land of ours on the East Coast of the U.S. I was reading some of your comments and I guess you're not so "new" anymore. How's it been going for you? Oh by the way, I am formerly a Southern Baptist. My husband and I are from South Florida and were members of a SB Church for many years. We moved to Connecticut to be closer to our Kids and Grandkids. This has been an unbelievable journey that only GOD could have orchaestrated. HE IS SO AWESOME. Well, hope all is well with you - Love in Christ - Nanci Martin

My wife is from Sacramento! We live in New Orleans, so she doesn't get a chance to visit much. Not sure if you know there is a preteen leaders conference in May at Sunset Christian Church in Rocklin. You might want to check it out. I went there last year and it rocked!

Kate - so nice to hear from you - I too am a cancer survivor, as well as a heart patient. I had open-heart surgery in 1998 and I am doing FANTASTIC! I have been working with children for so long - I think I started in Florida (where we originally lived for about 30 years) in 1989. It has always been a "trip" to say the least - but the journey with God has been an unbelievable experience. Even when I went through the cancer and open-heart - God was always with me and the children were the greatest. Hang in there honey - and enjoy every minute of your ministry - the good, the bad and the "ugly"!! Ha! Ha! Love Nanci

Hey Kate! Our service clubs are a direct result of doing Mega Ministry Camp this summer. It's similar to a VBS curriculum, but the kids learn various ministry skills. Although our numbers weren't huge as far as VBS standards go, the idea really took off. the clubs we do are a result of the adults who offered to help and what their skills are. We offer the 8 clubs a month, four on one Wednesday, four on another Wednesday. That way kids can be involved with 2 different clubs. WE are revisiting which clubs to offer starting in January. For example, our set building club built andpainted a puppet stage this fall, and helped with our VBS set in the summer. But we don't have anything we need that I can think of right now, so the leader is thinking about what similar activity to offer. We may just use them to decorate our kids worship area on a regular basis. Wherever God leads! Let me know if you have any specific questions I can answer.

Hey there, Kate. I thought I'd stop by your page, say hello and read a little bit about you. I also see that you're on my group - Ministry Wives.

I also wanted to encourage you as you venture through all things Children's Ministry. It can be overwhelming at first (sometimes I still get overwhelmed). I'm excited to connect with you and others on this site (I'm still trying to navigate around it...I'm familiar with Facebook - and it looks like it's set up similarly).

Have a wonderful day!
