Discipleship is like Jazz

Yes to the Mess Here is something that I’ve been learning from Pastor Daniel Montgomery and management professor/jazz musician Frank J. Barrett: Leadership–particularly discipleship–is like learning to play jazz.

You begin with basic instruction, but the goal is improvisation.

“The popular misconception is that jazz players are untutored geniuses who play their instruments as if they are picking notes out of thin air. But studies of jazz have shown that the art is very…

14 Ways to "Blow" Your Children's Ministry . . . Lose Focus on the Personal "Touch"

Last year my daughter-in-law posted an article on her fb entitled; "16 Ways I Blew My Marriage". It gives married couples a lot to think about in regards to keeping their marriage strong. As I read through and considered it, I thought some of these might apply to how we can keep from "blowing" our children's ministry, so while I originally posted this a year ago, I thought it might be helpful to repost for the next  14 days and share once again the ones which apply to…

Let's Celebrate our Kids!

In children's ministry it is important to "notice" kids who are doing the things we want them to do . . . memorizing verses, attending children's ministry opportunities, completing service projects, inviting friends to come to church with them, reading their Bible . . . etc. But we have to be careful to keep the balance between celebrating growth and good choices while not over-emphasizing "achieving" by "doing" things. Consider the following -…

Don't Keep Secret God's Great Faithfulness!

Yesterday I wrote about the great faithfulness of God. I said, "Aren't you glad to know God's love for you is unwavering and determined in purpose? I am! God loves me on my best days! God loves me on my worst days! God loves me on all my in-between days! And, this amazing, steadfast, unwavering love of God for me NEVER ceases! It never stops! Not ever! As if this wasn't enough, His mercies NEVER come to an end! God gives me His mercy when I blow it! God gives me His…

Continue

Do you love me? The incredible amazing brain, Part 5

How many times have you had a child ask you, “Do you love me … cause I love you?” Those of us who work in children’s ministry love to know that the little ones we work with love us.

There are reasons some kids need to know and need to be told that you love them. Many children of divorce question if their parents still love them. They need reassurance from caring adults that someone loves them.

Let me explain. Feeling loved comes from the emotional part of the brain. Learning…

Questions to Ponder as A Leader in the Home

I ran across these questions this week that made me step back and think specifically about how I’m doing as the leader in my home.  I think you will find these questions helpful in evaluating your priorities.  Think about these specifically for your family and evaluate how you are doing.  Many times in our lives we evaluate how we are doing in the work place but take…

New entry for Verse Finder. Matthew 1:23

New entry for Verse Finder.

Matthew 1:23

'Emmanuel' means 'God is with us'. Yes, he is always with us no matter either at joyful time or difficult time. You see that God is blessing you when you are happy, and you see that God is helping you when you are in trouble. You will be more thankful and stronger. Happiness and trouble both are gift from God.…

The Sermon Before The Sermon

first-impression3 At my church, I often refer to our First Impressions areas as “The Sermon Before The Sermon”.  I say this because when visitors come to a church they will usually develop an opinion on whether or not they like the church before one word of the sermon is spoken.  They will actually formulate their feeling for your church…

Summer Outreach! Family Events . . . and More!

I've been talking about Summer outreach and looked at re-focusing ministries you are already doing such as Sunday School and Mid-week Ministry, so they have vision, passion, a plan and are effective at reaching out to the families in your church and community. Today I'm going to talk about planning family events as special Summer outreach opportunities to the families in your church and community.

I'm not going to talk about children's…

Great is His faithfulness!

I love Lamentations 3:22, "The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness." Just stop and think about it . . .the "steadfast" love of the Lord never ceases! Steadfast! I'm so glad God's love is steadfast. The dictionary defines steadfast as, "unwavering or determined in purpose". Aren't you glad to know God's love for you is unwavering and…

Question of the day: How do I help a mom whose child has been physically abused?

“We were all so excited when one of our single moms married a man in our church. Little did we know this guy had a history of abuse. One of her little kids was hurt pretty bad by this guy. The state got involved and she and her children are safe now but the one that was abused the most has started to really act out. He goes into a rage at the least little thing. He hurts the other children and parents are starting to complain.  My volunteers are worried he is going to explode and really hurt…

Summer Outreach - Mid-Week Ministry

Yesterday I talked about an opportunity you currently provide . . . Sunday school . . . and how it relates to your Summer ministry. Today we will consider another thing you are probably already doing and some questions to help you "re-focus" it to be a truly effective Summer outreach . . . mid-week ministry.

Most churches have a mid-week ministry, but many of them experience limited "success" with this outreach. Let's take a moment to…

Safety is everything when it comes to Children’s Ministry.  Nothing can close the doors of your church faster than something happening to a child under your watch.  We want church to be a safe place for the kids that come.  We want parents to feel comfortable leaving their most precious possession in our care.  Here are 3 laws of a safe Children’s Ministry.
