The kids are going back to school and it’s easy to get caught up in our day-to-day lives and miss those special moments that make family time so important. That is why Ben and I are inviting you join us for Family Festivals…

Champions, cheerleaders, grandbuddies and mentors – oh my! How they can change a child’s life

Recently I read the book, “Cheering for the Children” by Casey Gwinn. This is an amazing book and while not written for church leaders or children’s ministers it is a worthwhile read to anyone ministering to children especially children who have experienced early trauma including the divorce of their parents.

Casey Gwinn is a man who…

Glad you found Jesus– goodbye and see you around

Several years ago I had a man tell me, “Don’t leave these kids from divorced homes at the foot of the cross!”

I wasn’t sure I heard what he said so I asked him to repeat it.

Don’t leave these kids of divorce at the foot of the cross!

This was very confusing to me. I had to ask what on earth was he talking about. He went onto explain.

I came to know Christ as a kid. I had a hard life early on. There was a lot of trauma in our family. One man mentored me…

Ethical Standards

Why do moral and ethical standards keep slipping?

It is because people choose their way over God’s way.

Choices are made on the basis of popularity – convenience -- and ease.

But…God’s way refers to choices made on the basis of discipline – obedience -- and truth.

Listen to the public debate on abortion – religious liberty – and sexual freedom. That is evidence enough.

Be…

Playing God is dangerous

God players. These are people who assume prerogatives that belong only to God.

Here are some illustrations.

Life…at its beginning and conclusion…is in God’s hands. People should not interfere.

The attribute of all knowing. That’s for God…not for man. It is dangerous to think that all mysteries of life can be understood.

Or…inventing belief systems. There is only one way – that’s the revelation of God in Christ – as…

Who Benefits & What Does This Mean?

http://www.aboutthechildrensdepartment.com/2015/07/who-benefits-what-does-this-mean.html

Which of the families in your ministry would benefit from having grandparents who are engaged, equipped and encouraged to focus on being intentional in the way they pass on a heritage of faith? While the answer may seem obvious, this is a serious question with a serious answer,…

How do you discuss the subject of forgiveness with children of divorce?

Forgiveness can be a difficult, sometimes impossible subject to explain when interacting with children who have separated or divorced parents.

Some children may have never had forgiveness modeled for them. Others have heard one of the parents scream sarcastically such as, “I’m sorry you made me hit you.” These kids have no clue what you are talking about when you say the word forgiveness.

Other children have seen one of their parents or…

Teaching Tuesday: Patience

Teaching Tuesday

So even thought we buy curriculum, occasionally there is a need to write our own stuff.  We’ve set a goal for ourselves to match what our adults teach 2-3 times a year depending on how things relate to the whole family, and one is usually Easter or Christmas.  This year we had a capital campaign and the lessons our curriculum had didn’t seem to…

A Statue & Why It Matters What We Do

http://www.grandmascookiejar.net/2015/07/a-statue-why-it-matters-what-we-do.html

Don't Miss the Mark!

http://www.aboutthechildrensdepartment.com/2015/07/dont-miss-mark.html

believe children's ministry is important and it matters; every church should be focused on what they want to accomplish in and with their children's ministry and have a real plan to do so.

But, I am becoming more and more convinced we are missing the mark in our children's ministries. We put all our "eggs in one…
