Staff v Volunteers Part 3 - The Strategy

I love to talk kidmin strategy, it is one thing that really gets me going.  Here are some of the strategies we  use to build an incredibly strong Harvestland team at Hope Church.

1.  Build a leadership team.  At least two leaders are best for each environment.  Why two?  Two are better than one, for they…

Family Pick - I'm Giving Away a Shake Up game!

This is another great game for families and for small groups . . . everyone will be able to play together! Pop up a big bowl of popcorn and play Shake Up together - make a rule, whenever you "bump" someone else's pawn to a lower level, you have to also "build them up" by sharing something you appreciate about them! Have fun with this game!

Summit Leadership, part three

So far we’ve learned that to be a summit leader we should

  1. Accept responsibility without demanding recognition
  2. Strategically test our abilities and risk failure

10Just as Saul was finishing with the burnt offering, Samuel…

One More Prayer For Your Ministry - Pray For the Most Important Thing!

There are certainly many things for us to pray about when it comes to praying for the children, families and volunteers in our ministry, but I think we can take a cue from Jesus as to the most important thing for us to pray about. In Matthew 22:37-40 someone asked Jesus which command was the most important; He said, "‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ …

YouTube Friday: One of my favorite clips of all time

I love the fall! The baseball playoffs start tonight. I feel like a 9-year-old kid the night before christmas knowing that the next morning Santa is going to bring him a red rider bebe gun. I love baseball and love the New York Yankees. Since its YouTube Friday I thought I would share with you one of my favorite clips of all time. I remember like it was yesterday! I also want to give the kidmin world fair warning that this is the time of year Jonathan Cliff and I become bitter enemies,…

Children’s Ministry People You Should Know – Tony Kummer

Welcome to a new semi-regular series here on Dad in the Middle.  One of the great joys I have gotten from my involvement in children’s ministry is the chance to meet and interact with a number of exceptional people who are also engaged in children’s ministry in some for or another.  Some of these people, you will recognize, others you may not.  What I am comfortable telling you is that you should get to know these people better.  It will only serve to edify you and help you to minister…

Writing with Maps

I pulled up a map of New Testament Israel last night, all in the name of comedy.

I was working on a scene at the Inn in Bethlehem. A couple from modern times is dropped into the bodies of the innkeeper and his wife, and they have a house full of complaining guests. The scene takes place at dinner, and there's a bit with a pair of customers complaining about the dinner. The customers were from out of town (in for the census, of course), and I needed a dish from…

Children’s Ministry Manifesto Pt. 1

While I wish my job were easier, that volunteers would be beating down my doors to be a part of Children’s Ministry, that curriculum would be less expensive and require less preparation or that Mary would just show up on time—at the end of the day I don’t really care about the cost, or if it’s easy on me or easy on our volunteers.  What I care about is whether or not our ministries, our programs and our materials effectively lead kids in a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.…

Doing ministry alone

I just had lunch with the Austin Kidmin Network. A year ago this group didn’t exist. Currently the group is up to 50 people, represented by about 15 churches. We’ve got a long way to go to connect other churches in our city, but some amazing relationships are developing. Yesterday I spend a few hours with one Children’s Pastor talking about doing some radical things together so we can…
