October YouLead Research: The Importance of Family Time and Spiritual Growth

If you knew that there were three things that would help your families’ spiritual formation the most, would you encourage the parents and kids you serve to try them? If you had to guess what those three things were, what would you say?

Here are some interesting findings when it comes to the importance of family time and spiritual growth:

The Search Institute (2007) found that the three factors as predictors of faith development in teens were:

7 Financial Principles for Kids, #5: We PREPARE for the future by planning and saving.

We PREPARE for the future by planning and saving.   The Bible teaches us to plan and save for the future, because Jesus has prepared a future for us (Prov 21:20; Luke 14:28-33; John 14:1).

  • Read John 14:1-6.  Talk to your child about heaven.  Talk to them about how Jesus is preparing a place for us there.
  • As a family talk about how ants and squirrels save for their future needs.  If you are able, go outside and demonstrate that ants will take small…

Everything I Needed to Know About Kidmin I Learned from my Jack-o-lantern

Every October my daughters and I have a huge, life-changing decision to make about faces.  What face are we going to carve on our jack-o-lanterns?  You only get one shot, and if you mess it up, you have to wait an entire year before you get to carve another one.    That is a ton of pressure!

So we take every precaution to get our faces as perfect as possible.  We draw out several different designs on paper, compare it to our actual pumpkins and decide which ones we want to use.  Then… Continue

Any Kidmin Friends Want to Go to Belize?

Seriously.  We are taking a team of families March 18-24 and would love to have some more people on the ground with us.  If you have ever considered doing a family ministry trip and want to see how it functions before taking a team from your church, we would love for you to go.  You have to be fun and flexible and you have to be nice.  I don’t take grumpy people.

We are estimating the cost to be $1500 which includes EVERYTHING.

Our hope is to do VBS in the…

American Girl Doll Give-Aways! I'm Giving Two Away . . . How Can You Win One???

As you know, if you've been reading my other blog - grandma's cookie jar, I'm giving away two American Girl Dolls! I'm giving away a Marie-Grace doll and a Kanani doll, so . . . what do you have to do to enter these drawings??? There seems to be a little confusion on the specifics for getting entries in my drawings, so let's see if I can do a better job at explaining this time!

What Does a Thankful Life Look Like?

Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away . . . so of course, we all tend to think and talk about being thankful. Thankfulness; however; should be more than something we just think and talk about. What does a thankful life look like? We want the children in our ministries to live what they learn, so when it comes to being thankful, we want them to understand what a truly thankful life looks like when it is lived in their every day lives. Consider the following . . .

Answering Kids’ Tough Questions

This week I got to put together a teaching on answering kids’ tough questions. (Sidenote: Tony Kummer from Ministry-to-Children.com has a really cool project coming soon… be watching for it).

It was funny that while I was working on it I got messages from two different church members about how to answer wild questions that their kids…

I’m excited about Halloween!

Several years ago God struck me with a thought…

If my church were to disappear today, would my community feel the loss?

Dig deeper…

If my family moved, would my neighborhood feel the loss?

This question sits with me all the time.  Aside from a different group of…

The Bible and Children of Divorce

Welcome to part 1 of our five part series called “Caring for Modern Day Orphans (A Bible Study on Caring for Orphans and the Fatherless).”  The Bible speaks extensively about caring for orphans and the fatherless.  What started as a quick survey of verses about orphans and the fatherless quickly turned into a 6,000 word study which I’ve split into five parts for purposes of this blog.  In this study, we will examine what the Bible has to say about orphans and widows, how it…

7 Financial Principles for Kids, #4: We GIVE freely because we’ve freely received from Jesus!

#4 We freely GIVE because we have freely received from Jesus (Prov 11:24; Matt 10:8).  The Bible tells us to give money cheerfully to help our church and other people in need (2 Cor 9:7).  It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35).  The Bible teaches the principal of giving a minimum of 10% to the local church (Malachi 3:10).

  • Ask your child to help you find something in your home (it could be canned food or money) that you could give to someone in…

Halloween Outreach Idea

We made these candy bars to give away for trick or treat time today. They say "God Loves You" and have info about the fun things kids can do at journey kids church! Should be fun!  The idea is to have bigger bar than they normally get so it exceeds their expectations.  Then have the message that God loves them.  Then there is program info on the back for the parents with Web site and QR code.  Finally - there…

What Would Your Life Be Like Without God's Word?

For the past month I've been encouraging you to involve the children in your ministry in a project to help bring God's Word to the Mwinika people in Mozambique. Today I'd like to ask you to stop and think for a moment, what would your life be like if you didn't have a Bible? How would you know Who God Is? How would you find out how to know and walk with Him? Where would you turn for help, encouragement and answers? How would you find truth? What would your life be like without God's…
