Making Children's Church Better: Rules Part 2

IMG_0292 Rules are not a fun subject - but I believe they are necessary!

Regardless of the lack of actual comments on the last post - I was encouraged with the feedback from twitter, Facebook and with personal messages from friends, and fellow KidMin leaders. Hey, I even got a shout-out from the Kids Pastor at our church during children's church while she reviewed the rules with the kids :)

Here we go with Part…

Making Children's Church Better: Rules Part 1

I hate rules… I really do.

I prefer to do things my way, on my time, with little to no restrictions. That’s how creative people tend to thrive. It feels like freedom - like the sky’s the limit. But I’ve come to realize that I’m sometimes most effective when…

Making Children's Church Better: Transitions

I still believe that one of the best ways to minister to children is with the "Children's Church" model.

Call it "Children's Church", "Kids Church", "Junior Church", "Large Group Time," etc.…

Now… What Is It That You Will Be Doing?

We got a lot of traffic to our blog when I posted “Now... Where Are You Going?” I decided to follow it up with a post about our responsibilities as we enter this new season.

There are many pictures that come to mind when I say that we are missionaries. I…

This Is So Much Bigger Than Us!

I don’t think most people understand or comprehend the enormity of what God has called us to.

It’s big! I mean God-Sized Big… And…

Doyle Family Missions – the Journey Begins!

Back in 2012, after returning home from a missions trip to Kenya with Jay Risner, I knew that this trip had been different – I had been on numerous missions trips before. But, this one was unique…God was stirring something inside. It turned out to be a passion for the mission-field!…

If It’s Worth Doing, It’s Worth Doing Well If It’s Worth Doing At All

A very wise man in ministry recently told me this in regard to a conference we were both at.

How does this relate to what you do in KidMin:

  • Do you show up with half a lesson ready? Then, start prepping earlier in the week… or better yet - earlier in the…

Broaden Your Ability & Minister to More Kids

I cannot begin to describe to you the feeling I get when I can help influence someone else. And then I got to thinking that we all have the ability to influence others in our ministries. We can actually make an impact on someone else’s ministry to children! You may never know all of the amazing lives that have been… Continue

Some Random Thoughts for KidMin's

  • Continue to communicate vision to your team
  • Find new ways to connect with parents
  • Go be alone once in a while
  • Your enemy is not your pastor, the board, your volunteers or the parents
  • This whole #kidmin calling isn’t about you
  • Drink some coffee
  • Change your voicemail (don’t make it goofy)
  • Find a way to serve another…

Adding Value to What You Do

Recently we have been activating a new philosophy in ministry and it’s working… at least for us. We started looking through the eyes of the average churchgoer to see what they see when they look at our ministries – how do they view it and why? We saw that we looked desperate: Our recruitment method was to start calling people on the phone and saying “Hey, If you could help us out – that would be really great… any chance?” we would get reluctant “yeses” but only because they felt sorry for…

Play to Other’s Perceptions

Perception is a powerful thing.  Everyone has a bunch of perceptions that order their world. And, everyone has a bunch about you and your ministry that may order your world.  So play to it.

In other words; the vast majority of people in your church have a perception about you and your ministry based on…

Resources You Already Have On Hand

You are a creative person - that’s how God made you. Put it to work as you consider the resources you already have on hand for little to no money. You’ll be surprised how much God has already blessed you with if you’ll just do a little extra work, investigation and have enough humility to ASK. Here you…

Yep - A Card Trick in Church - try it!

Here's an unusual card trick that I've used to talk about the King of Kings (since the cards you use are kings)

If you have a few minutes - try this and tell me what you think.

My Pastor's Vision Problem - part 2

Investigation

So, with the last post being said, let’s look at some ways to figure out what your Pastor’s vision for the church really is:

Ask Him

Sounds pretty simple doesn’t it, but in my last post, I suggested that you  set a meeting and allow your Pastor to just dream in front of you.  Bring a notepad and pen, or even a voice recorder.

Listen…

My Pastor's Vision Problem - part 1

Something difficult I’ve realized in the journey of a KidMin pastor is that most Lead Pastors don’t have a specific vision for children’s ministry.  And guess what?  That’s OK!

Now, let me say off the bat, that I am blessed to currently serve a Pastor who has a specific vision for the church and… Continue

The Art of Gospel Magic - Part 1

EXPERIENCES ...kids remember them!

The phrase, “Gospel Magic” conjures up some interesting images in many KidMin leaders’ minds.  For some, it’s a passion, for others it was a passing fad, still others shy away because of a bad experience.

The art of magic really has nothing to…
