What is the Church?

What is the Church? by Mandy Groce and Bill Bell

Illustrated by Tessa Janes

Ages: 4-3rd Grade

Amazon

Amazon Summary:

The church is not a building. It is a people that God has called together and made alive by faith. Although the activities of the church are important this book begins with who God’s people are – recognizing that the church’s activity results from its identity. When we call children to be a part of the church, we are calling them to be a part of a gospel people. And, as a gospel people, the church is a believing family, a community of missionaries, servants, learners and worshipers. This book is a call to God’s people to live as the people that God has made them to be.

Review:

I love this book.  It’s exactly what we teach our kids about deepening their relationship and it’s done on a preschool level.  It’s fun hand drawn illustrations that draw kids in with rhyming lines throughout. The font might make it a little difficult for early readers to manage on their own, but this is something kids up to 2nd grade would enjoy.  I might even read it to my 5th graders sometime.

I also love that at the back of the book are parent pages.  It explains why this is an important concept with the main points.  It also has discussion questions for them to talk about with their kids as well as some activities to tie it into their family time.

Christmas.  This book stays focused on the mission of the church in a way kids can understand.
