This is a lot like what Wanda is doing, but a little different.  This year we are doing "Socks of Love" for our fall mission project.  Basically what we are doing is taking toiletry donations and stuffing them in men's tube socks, and taking them to a local homeless shelter.  Each person will receive: 1 pair of warm socks, shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, comb/brush, hand-sanitizer, tissues, chapstick, and a track.  The kids (PreK-6th grade) are going to "assemble" the socks and then help deliver them.  This is an easy way to really get ALL the kiddos involved.  Even the preschoolers can help stuff socks!! :)

Our kids visit a local nursing home every summer.  We practice a few songs (ones that the residents probably remember singing in children's church) and learn sign language to go with a few of them.  We'll also make cards and pictures for the residents a few weeks in advance.  At our visit, the kids will sing the songs and then pass out the cards to the residents.

Just joined CM Connect!  I'm so looking forward to getting great ideas.

a few months ago our 5th and 6th graders made "blessings" bags which included everything from toothbrush/toothpaste, bottled water, deodorant, to crackers, tissues and floss. they keep these bags in their parents cars and offer them to homeless people they come across in our city. our church donated enough things to make over 90 bags. the kids were so excited to be doing this!

Thanks Sherry. I will check out the website. I think I might be interested in the book.

Standard Publishing VBS has a service element in it. They have community showcase leader's guide and a DVD that gives ideas for service project even it you don't use the whole VBS program. We also have a book on community service projects that also have a great many ideas. You can email me shocking@standardpub.com and I can get you more information or you can check out www.standardpub.com for the service project book and www.vacationbibleschool.com for the VBS material.
